Scope, estimate, then work
Every matter begins with a conversation about what the issue actually is. That conversation is not charged. If there is work to do, you receive a written scope and a fee estimate before it starts, together with a costs agreement that complies with the disclosure requirements under the Legal Profession Uniform Law.
Discrete pieces of work — a deed review, a ruling application, an objection, a piece of written advice — are usually quoted as a fixed fee. Larger matters are scoped in phases, each with its own estimate, so you can stop or reassess at the end of any phase.
Have a matter you want a straight answer on?
Most engagements start with a short conversation about the issue, what the exposure looks like and what it would cost to deal with it properly. There is no charge for that conversation.
